Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
