Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
